ESG / Community Engagement

We recognise our responsibilities extend well beyond exploration and mining. We are committed to creating lasting, positive change wherever we operate. Our approach to Community Engagement is founded on a deep respect for the local communities in which we operate, a recognition of the importance of mining for sustainable economic growth, and a strong belief in the long-term potential of Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Our work is guided by Zimbabwe’s growth point strategy—a national development model introduced to promote decentralised economic growth. The strategy encourages investment in rural areas to stimulate local economies and reduce dependency on central hubs. By positioning key infrastructure and employment centres in targeted regions, the growth point model enables entire communities to grow around a strong, sustainable foundation.

Kavango fully embraces this philosophy. We see every mine and exploration site not only as a potential economic asset, but as a starting point for broader development. In every location, our goal is to act as a catalyst for inclusive, prosperous, long-term growth.

We do this in four key ways:

1. Creating Direct Local Employment

Wherever possible, Kavango recruits from the communities in close proximity to our projects. We prioritise hiring national staff, investing in training and skills development to build long-term careers, not just jobs. Our teams are empowered with opportunities to grow, take on greater responsibility, and develop professionally, with clear opportunities for promotion.

2. Building Local Supply Chains

Mining activity stimulates regional economic growth. As we develop our projects, we work to ensure opportunities are passed on to local businesses. Mining projects encourage the development of new shops, housing, services, and suppliers. This multiplier effect helps to increase incomes far beyond our immediate footprint.

3. Improving Physical Infrastructure

Our operations depend on reliable infrastructure, and we take every opportunity to upgrade what’s already in place. This includes upgrading access roads, strengthening power supply, and developing better water systems. These improvements benefit not only our sites but also the people in surrounding communities.

4. Enhancing Environmental Standards

We are committed to responsible environmental stewardship. We minimise surface disruption, rigorously manage waste and tailings, and aim to rehabilitate land post-extraction. Where possible, we go further, helping to build a culture of environmental awareness among local communities.
