Shaft Mining (and how we make it safe)

Shaft mining is the most well-established method of reaching underground ore bodies globally. It involves sinking a vertical shaft from surface down to the ore. Horizontal tunnels are then developed from the shaft to follow and extract the deposit.

Shaft mining is especially useful where space is limited or topography prevents surface excavation. It provides direct access to deep ore and minimal surface disruption, and carries a small development footprint.

However, shaft mining must be done safely. Without the right systems in place, it can carry risk – particularly in older or informal operations. Kavango is committed to doing things differently. We apply strict modern standards across all our shaft operations, including:

  • Modern, well-maintained hoisting systems
  • Advanced ventilation for clean air underground
  • Detailed emergency procedures and staff training

We also design our shafts using up-to-date geological and geotechnical data. This ensures each shaft is suited to the site and built for long-term use.

In Zimbabwe, many shafts were originally developed by artisanal miners. These often lack proper support or safety measures. Kavango is upgrading or replacing this infrastructure where needed, turning legacy shafts into safe, efficient production assets.
